  5. Here’s a thought.

    Autonomous action must answer to a standard other than one’s own selfish wants. Rather than merely aiming for self-centered consistency, one must weigh love, truth, justice and other virtues as higher callings as a being-amongst-others. Each of us lives as a being-amongst-others, whose life depends on those others in a multitude of ways. It is inconsistent with facts of life to assume that “man is an island” and that self-absorbed continuity is an end goal or a sustainable mode of happiness. That is not true autonomy, and it is a false sense of independence.

    Current obsession: Pictures of the Sun from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, a NASA mission to study our home star through numerous types of light. This thing really produces some stunning, surreal images. Everything about the Sun is interesting to me.
